National countdown — 3 days to go

How many bands have actually completed a 'Grand Slam' at the Albert Hall since we opened our doors to Europe in 1978 — not many.

Albert Hall

With Cory on the possible verge of adding another leg to their quest for a ‘Golden Grand Slam’ this year, 4BR has looked back into recent banding history to find who else has won it all in the same year.

Not surprisingly – not many. In fact – just the one.

Just one

Since the European Championships started in 1978 just the one band has competing in all their ‘majors’ and won the lot in the same season: Area, European, Open and National – Black Dyke in 1985.

The band didn’t compete in the ‘World Championship’, but it is generally accepted that this was the first real ‘Grand Slam’ of the modern era.

Close

Others of course have come close.

A ‘Triple Crown’ of European, Open and National victories was won by Black Dyke in 1995 (they didn’t compete at the Area).

Since 1978, two out of the four has been won by YBS (on four occasions) and Black Dyke (twice) and Fairey held the Open and National titles in 1993 and went on to win the 1994 European (they didn’t compete at their Areas in either years).

But that's all — difficult isn't it?
