Philip Harper has started a new venture called ‘all 4 music’ which he hopes will offer new musical opportunities for everyone — by getting them to enjoy everything from Beethoven to African Drumming, Theory Courses and even Come and Sing ABBA!
How to conduct
One part of the new courses he is offering is called ‘How to Conduct Yourself’ and it’s a year’s course (broken into 3 parts) which will start by taking students through the basic patterns of conducting, then address rehearsal technique and communication skills (use of words and body language).
Skills
It will also develop skills such as multi-tasking and score-reading and there will be the chance for hands-on practice every week in a relaxed and supportive setting.
Conducting philosophy will also be discussed, as well as studying some of the most famous conductors from the past.

Lucky student
Then, at the course’s culmination, there will be the chance for one lucky student to conduct the Emerald Ensemble, Bristol’s professional orchestra, in a public performance. For any amateur conductor (or total beginner) who’s serious about their art, this course would be highly beneficial!
Information
The course starts on Thursday 8th October, 7:30-9:30pm at Filton College in north Bristol (very close to M4 and M5 motorways) and will be led by Jonathan James, one of the area’s most experienced conductors.
