National Australia Brass will this week celebrate the 1st anniversary since its inception as Australia’s national band in July 2008.
NAB Fest
With musical activities focused at Western Sydney’s St Marys Band Club, thirty five of Australia’s finest band musicians fly in to commence rehearsals as part of their preparation for the new NABfest concept which is currently being developed for launch in 2010.
NABfest 2010 is being planned in conjunction with the Federation of Australasian Brass Bands (FABB) to provide National Australia Brass with the opportunity to launch its own community band musicianship festival week with the Australasian band community benefiting from this educational week of workshops, master classes and concerts.
National Australia Brass is also providing the NABfest concept as a mobile festival working in collaboration with major Arts festivals and organizations of national profile throughout Australia.
National Australia Brass was ‘ensemble in residence’ at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass in 2008 and NAB has commenced negotiations with the Brisbane Festival for inclusion in the 2010 Arts festival.
Concert
NAB continues its policy of premiering new compositions with the 1st performance of ‘The Son of Felin’ by Gareth Westwood, commissioned for National Australia Brass to be performed in concert later this week.
The programme also includes Philip Sparke’s Concerto Grosso for Quartet and Band featuring four of Australia’s finest soloists – Paula Russell & Dave Barker — cornet, Bruce Myers – horn, and Matthew Van Emmerick – euphonium.
Professor David King and National Australia Brass will join musical forces with the renowned Sydney Male Voice Choir directed by Dr Alan Thrift. The ‘Brass & Voices’ concert is organized by events promoters Brass Down Under and is to be held at Avondale College, Lake Macquarie on Saturday July 25th, 7pm.
