Although evidence exists which indicates that the small Welsh town of Ruthin had a town band from the late 1800's up until the mid 1900’s, unfortunately, the band folded in approximately 1958.
Disbanded
The band was officially disbanded by Ruthin Town Council in 1962 when it was resolved that all instruments etc, be donated to the Brynhyfryd School, Ruthin for the benefit/use of its pupils.
Approximately three years ago, Ruthin were fortunate when John Powell of Tubalaté and his wife Heather came to reside and work in the area as peripatetic brass tutors.
Successful
Following a very successful two-year period and setting up the County Youth Brass Band and the 'Seren Bach' Training Band, they were both convinced that Ruthin and the Vale could support a brass band.
In October 2008 an open public meeting was held to test local opinion and support. The response was very positive, with considerable interest being shown by a large group of brass musicians.
We feel the whole day was a great success and have been delighted with the positive feedback we have received from those who attended the eventRuthin Band
Progress
Progress made since that first meeting has been beyond expectations. By January 2009, it has almost twenty musicians within its ranks and the standard of performance in such a short time had exceeded John Powell’s expectations.
The band has just held their first Slow Melody Contest in which over 70 young people took to the stage and in the evening they held their first concert which also featured the Denbighshire County Brass Band and the winning soloists.
Positive
A spokesperson told 4BR: "We feel the whole day was a great success and have been delighted with the positive feedback we have received from those who attended the event."
"We were also fortunate to have the services of tuba star Les Neish at the event. As a good friend of John Powell, Les managed to fit this concert into his busy schedule."
Sting
Les had just returned back from a trip in Florence rehearsing for a new album recording with pop star Sting.
Les even donned the Ruthin Town Band jacket and played in the band and then wowed the audience with a display of technical brilliance and fantastic multiphonic skills.
