With a history dating back over 1350 years, Peterborough Cathedral is a storehouse of archaeological, architectural, cultural, musical and artistic treasures for visitors to discover and enjoy.
On the last Saturday before Christmas it also became the perfect canvas on which the number 1 ranked band in the world could paint their magical sound pictures, conjuring up a true ‘fest of music and carols’, indeed as the promoters declared, ‘something for everyone’.
Outstanding ensemble
This was not the juggernaut all-conquering contesting Cory but an outstanding ensemble of artistes demonstrating superb musicianship under the baton of Philip Harper, all blended with a spirit of freedom and control in equal measure.
The audience, although peppered with a fair collection of brass band aficionados was largely populated with those expecting a wholly festive concert. Cory under their consummate MD/MC used not just their musicianship but engaging stage presence to connect across the spectrum of concert-goers.
Bubbling along
‘A Christmas Pot-Pourri’, ‘Three Kings Swing’, ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Santaclaustrophobia’ kept the first half bubbling along at a cracking pace in contrast to the tranquillity set by the Cathedral Choir’s contributions of traditional and sacred chorales.
Mezzo-Soprano Lynette Alcantara, brought a further dimension; her solos accompanied by choir, organ, piano and band in music by Reger, Britten, Cornelius and Handel.
The highlight was a sublime performance of ‘O Holy Night’ - glowing as warm as an open fire with the immaculate band accompaniment producing final three chords to die for. In same vein was MD’s arrangement of ‘The Irish Carol’, with the lyrical playing of Stephanie Wilkins rising from the 2nd cornet chair.
Stellar
Two of the band’s stellar soloists completed the full line up, with sop star Steve Stewart picking up the trumpet for a romp through the last movement of the Hummel ‘Trumpet Concerto’ and Matt White, playing beautifully in ‘White Christmas’
After a break for mince pies and mulled wine, the second half started with the show-stopper of ‘Climb Every Mountain’, featuring the lyricism of Owen Farr and Matthew White and the scintillating topping provided by the astonishing Steve Stewart.
Template
The second half was a template repeat of thoroughly enjoyable seasonal music, solos and congregational carol singing.
‘Lux Aeterna’ was a sumptuous, ethereal highlight, whilst ‘Schneewaltzer’ had everyone swaying in time in the aisles. David Buckle of the Prestige event management team was summoned from the wings to conduct the best brass band in the world in ‘Christmas Joy’ in recognition of his birthday - what a treat that was for him!
‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ sent everyone on their way home into a beautiful winter’s night.
Prestige Promotions presentation enhanced the musical fayre through their quality souvenir programme and creative use and production of the thoroughly professional camera and projection team.
They should be congratulated on delivering a quality concert at a wonderful venue, to a capacity and highly ‘Christmassy’ drenched audience.
