Memories of the friendship as well as the musical inspiration provided by a fine man and outstanding trombone player were on show at this memorial concert.
Mike Tilley’s untimely death from cancer shocked so many - the former head teacher being a popular and gregarious figure in the south Wales valleys musical community for over half a century.
Fine celebration
His last band provided a fine celebration - with generous acknowledgments to a musical career that started just down the valley in Celynen and took in stops at the likes of Tredegar and Sun Life as well as innumerable pit performances for just about any local organisation in need of help.
Cory solo trombone Chris Thomas, who was his eager protégé in his youth, was joined by his son Daniel as the guest soloists on the night – both on fantastic form (the duet ‘Softly As I Leave You’ bringing tears to the eyes of many), whilst the band, augmented by friends, was equally as good with playing that reinforced the message of musical friendship.
That was shown with items such as ‘The Lost Chord’ and ‘Walking with Heroes’ mixed with ‘Breezin’ down Broadway’, ‘Best of Bond’, ‘Disney Fantasy’ and principal cornet John Harris producing a fine rendition of ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’.
As compere David Hayward reminded everyone - a much missed friend, colleague and musician would have perhaps been a little embarrassed by the outpouring of such passion on his behalf, but would also have been delighted that everyone had such a good time along the way.
Smiles of joy
Abertillery Operatic Society also paid their tribute with a selection of hits from the shows (Mike played in just about everyone that was put on), whilst the trombone quartet of friends brought smiles of joy with their spirited ‘I Will Follow Him’.
As compere David Hayward reminded everyone - a much missed friend, colleague and musician would have perhaps been a little embarrassed by the outpouring of such passion on his behalf, but would also have been delighted that everyone had such a good time along the way.
He would have certainly raised a glass of his favourite tipple to the news that two cancer charities will have benefitted by the substantial amount of money raised on the night.
