NABBC Final

There is £1,000 up for grabs at the final of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors Competition next week.

The NABBC's Young Conductors' Competition takes place on Saturday, 20th May at the Chriysalis Theatre, Milton Keynes.

Six conductors

Six conductors will take part and the afternoon session sees them rehearsing the GUS Virtuosi Band on their various test pieces — 'Ballet for Band', 'Connotations', 'Downland Suite', 'Kensington Concerto', 'Purcell Variations' and the Vaughan Williams 'Variations for Brass Band'.

Concert performance

Candidates will give their 'Concert Performance' in the evening and prizes are £1,000, £500 and £250.

To round of the evening's music-making GUS will give a short concert, under John Berryman, prior to the announcement of results by adjudicators Lt. Col Chris Davis and Dr Roy Newsome.

Dr Newsome told 4BR: "We're anticipating a good audience to give encouragement to these young hopefuls."

The afternoon session begins at 1.30pm and the evening at 6.30pm. Admission for the whole event is £7.50 (concessions £5), and tickets are available on the door.

January 20 • Wantage Band (championship section) has a vacant 2ND CORNET position. This would suit a player with experience in a championship or first section band. Rehearsals take place every Sun 7:30pm and Wed 8pm in Wantage with highly experienced MD Chris King.


Rushden Town Band

January 19 • 2nd Trombone position of this fun loving band. . . Great diary of regular concerts throughout the year, plus at least 2 contests per year. Recently recorded its first CD and off on its second tour in May 2025.
