The state of California is not known for its brass bands or euphonium soloists, but last week both were given a boost when euphonium star David Childs landed in Los Angeles to give a series of recitals and guest soloist appearances in the Golden State.
Prestigious
The Performing Arts Division of Pasadena City College host a prestigious recital series traditionally featuring voice, string or piano performances.
However, together with resident pianist Jacqueline Petitto, David gave a recital with an emphasis on original French repertoire and Baroque transcriptions for euphonium.

Natural
Beth Mitchell, a tuba professor and studio performer in Los Angeles was at the recital and told 4BR: "David is such a natural musician. Usually applause for the noon concerts is polite — but thunderous applause, cries of bravo, and a standing ovation were a first for that audience! It was awesome and inspiring."
Whilst at Pasadena City College David also coached the Wind Orchestra and led a masterclass focusing on John Williams' 'Concerto for Tuba & Band'.
Star sharing
David's second concert appearance was presented by the South West Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, and was shared with U.S. tuba star Patrick Sheridan.
The concert followed a masterclass in which David focused mainly on orchestral and wind-band repertoire for the instrument before giving a short course in solo performance.
Extraordinary
Los Angeles resident Ken Barry attended both masterclass and concert performances and commented: "David showed himself to be a down to earth, world-class performer. His extraordinary performances brought the audience to their feet and were only enhanced by his genuine humility."
During the concert David featured music by Philip Sparke, Peter Graham, Jan Sandstrom, and treated the audience to what has become his trademark encore, 'The Hot Canary' — dedicated to Pat Sheridan.
Be Happy!
David's final concert took place in Fullerton's Church of St. Andrew, home to a congregation including, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" star singer, Bobby McFerrin.
Billed as 'A Whitsunday Concert in the British Style' David was backed by the Golden State British Brass Band conducted by Jack Hollander.
Following solos from Ireland, Wales and England, David completed his set with 'Rule Britannia', before providing a spectacular encore of 'Carnival of Venice'.
Lasting impression
As one fan commented: "His performances have greatly assisted in popularising the euphonium and brass band in this part of the world, and certainly left a lasting impression."
