The Gresley Colliery Band has announced the death of their Presidnet, Des Boddice on Monday 18th May after a brave battle against cancer.
Celebrations
Des joined the band in 1935, with one of his first performances playing at the celebrations for King George V Silver Jubilee. Despite many changes within the banding world Des remained a stalwart, playing most instruments ranging from baritone to solo cornet.
Excelled
Des excelled at many behind the scenes roles within the band helping out in many organisational and fund-raising roles. One of his most notable roles was that of Bandmaster which he held for many years.
In 1999 Des' 65 years of hard work in banding was recognised when he was honoured by the Worshipful Company of Musicians4BR
Dedication
His commitment and dedication to the band which he loved remains an inspiration to this day.
During the 1940s Des began the work which was to be his greatest legacy — the teaching of music.
Generous
Over the next 50 years he gave generously and graciously of his time, to pass on his musical knowledge and playing skills to young and old alike, with a patience that was to encourage many a player.
Honoured
In 1999 Des’ 65 years of hard work in banding was recognised when he was honoured by the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
Des will be sadly missed by everyone at Gresley and also his friends in the wider brass banding world.
Service
The funeral service will take place on Tuesday 26th May at 3:00 pm at Bretby Crematorium, Swadlincote, Derbyshire. All friends and family are welcome.
