Friendly contesting rivalry at Otley as bands entertain the crowds, as York Railway steam to victory...

York Railway

The inaugural Otley Mayor's Entertainment Contest Challenge took place in Otley, West Yorkshire, on the weekend.

The 30 minute programme contest, judged by David Horsfield was hailed as a success by the three bands taking part, as well as the audience that filled the Otley Civic Centre.

Prizes

The prizes were given to York Railway — 2nd Section; Garforth — Yorkshire 3rd Section Champions and Otley — Hardraw Scar 3rd/4th Section winners 2007, 2008.

Friendly rivalry

The emphasis was on friendly competition, with the three conductors, Derek Warley, Steve Bailey and Gordon Eddison being close friends and colleagues working as peri- teachers for Education Leeds.

Winners

The winners were York Railway who as well as winning the challenge trophy also scooped the 'Chris Bailey Trophy' for the outstanding instrumentalist with the cornet playing of 17 year old Sam Lovatt.

Plans are in hand for next year's contest, which may expand dependant on interest.
