Lexington to premiere new Curnow tuba solo

Dr. Skip Gray, Professor of Tuba at the University of Kentucky, will premiere Fantasia for Tuba and Brass Band by Kentucky composer James Curnow

The Lexington Brass Band, joined by the Lexington Chamber Chorale, present their exciting season finale, Dance, Flourish and Fantasy, on Sunday, April 19th.

Dances from the Renaissance pavan to the modern tango step front and center on the sound stage in this dynamic, collaborative concert. The Lexington Chamber Chorale last joined Lexington Brass Band on the occasion of the band’s 10th anniversary concert. This reunion will once again prove to be a festive celebration that will delight the widest audience.

Dr. Skip Gray, Professor of Tuba at the University of Kentucky, will premiere Fantasia for Tuba and Brass Band by Kentucky composer James Curnow. His colleagues in the tuba section--James Willett (EKU), Stacy Baker (Morehead State), Glen Flanigan (Asbury), all tuba professors at their respective universities--will then join him in a rollicking, fun-filled ‘Old Soldiers’: Fantasia for Four Tubas and Brass Band.

The central piece of the concert will be Kevin Norbury’s Flourish and Dances, a four movement suite in which Renaissance dances and fanfares gestures are brought up to date in brilliant manner. Other dance music on the concert will include Astor Piazzola’s popular Libertango and Peter Graham’s Klezmer-inspired, and frolic-filled Cossack Wedding Dance.
