The Melbourne International Festival of Brass commenced this afternoon in fine style, with three Victorian community brass bands and their conductors in an open workshop with Professor David King.
Community bands
Footscray-Yarraville (Philippa Edwards), Geelong West (Jeff Steele), and Boroondara Harmony Brass (Danny van Bergen), each had brief sessions with the world renowned conductor. As well as working with the bands, each of the conductors have work to take away with them before their next appearance later in the week at MIFB, this time directing National Australia Brass in collaboration with Professor King.
Barry Tuckwell Prize semi-final
Also today, the semi-final of the Barry Tuckwell Prize was held. The competition this year is for cornet.
Artists through to the final, to be held Thursday morning, are Paula Russell and Josh Rogan.
The adjudicators for todays semi-final were Professor Barry Tuckwell, Professor David King, and Geoffrey Payne.
The two finalists shall choose to perform either Prelude and Cappricio (Gregson) or Slavische Fantasy (Hohne), and a work by Helen Johnston.
National Australia Brass
As well, members of National Australia Brass travelled from Australia and New Zealand to commence their intense week as Ensemble in Residence.
National Australia Brass and its Director, Professor David King will present open rehearsals tomorrow and Tuesday, and will perform in a concert on Friday evening where the band will present 5 major works, as well as accompany Jens Lindemann, and the winner of the Barry Tuckwell prize.
