Open success at Sherborne

The recent Open Day at Sherborne was fun, games and a great success.

Sherborne

The recent Sherborne Town Band Open Day was a great success.

At the bandroom on the terrace playing fields the band welcomed many children and their parents, who came to try the instruments, play games, take part in competitions and generally make a lot of noise.

Fun

It was great to see so many young people discovering that music making can be such fun.

The Open Day was the launch pad for the Sherborne Town Band’s new Youth Education Scheme.

The Town Band's vision is to help children gain an understanding and a lifelong love of music. I think everyone agreed that the open day was a great step along that roadSherborne Town Band

Younger generation

Mainly aimed at the younger generation, it was terrific to see the mums and dads joining in the fun, and some of the parents have signed up to learn alongside their children.

The bubble blowing competition proved very popular, as did the musical word game and the highly amusing blow the tail on the Donkey

Lego and hosepipe

In another corner David Bertie, the Director of the youth scheme, was giving impromptu lessons with his unique Lego and Hosepipe system of instruction. The children then progressed easily to playing the cornet accompanied by the CD that is incorporated in the first tutor book.

The Town Band also gave a short concert in the open air, which included a duet played by one of their youngest members and the Conductor Steve Rogers.

First session

The first session for Starter Brass and the Youth Band is on Thursday 18th September at 6.30pm at the Terrace Band room. The band is looking forward to welcoming all the new members who signed up to join the course.

A band spokeperson told 4BR: "The Town Band’s vision is to help children gain an understanding and a lifelong love of music. I think everyone agreed that the open day was a great step along that road."

The band would like to thank The Rotary Club of Sherborne Castles for their generous support of the new Youth Scheme.
