Following his historic win at the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition in Cardiff on the weekend, 12 year old Peter Moore has been inundated with letters, and messages of congratulations from all over the world.
Press coverage
He has also been subject to an amazing amount of press coverage too, with interviews on the BBC to articles written about him in many of the leading daily newspapers.
Nyman composition
The most amazing recognition however has come with the news that composer Michael Nyman has asked to write a solo work for the brilliant trombonist to be played at the forthcoming Nyman Concert celebrations on the 7th June at Cadogan Hall in London.
It was with great pleasure that I welcomed 12 year old Peter Moore being voted 2008 Young Musician of the Year. It goes without saying he played wonderfully. What was more important was his choice of instrumentMarcel Berlins — The Guardian newspaper
Worldwide interest
The work for piano and trombone will see the composer at the keyboard and will form a central part of the concert that has already attracted worldwide interest.
Swamped
Wingates Band Manager Graham Hall told 4BR: “The family has been swamped by messages of congratulations from the weekend and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their best wishes and support. Michael Nyman was particularly delighted and came up with the offer immediately.”
Graham added: “Although at present we don’t know the name of the piece, it is hoped that the dup will be able to get together to rehearse the piece in the near future and then deliver the world premiere at the Nyman concert.”
Guardian coverage
Meanwhile, Peter’s achievement has meant a barrage of press coverage, with the renowned Marcel Berlins in ‘The Guardian’ waxing lyrical about his achievement.
Wonderful playing
In the Wednesday edition of G2 he wrote: "It was with great pleasure that I welcomed 12 year old Peter Moore being voted 2008 Young Musician of the Year. It goes without saying he played wonderfully. What was more important was his choice of instrument."
Shine a light
Being a great fan of jazz he went on to write that he hoped Peter’s victory may help with the profile and the development of a new generation of great jazz exponents who could follow in the footsteps of Kid Ory and Jack Teagarden too. "Perhaps Peter Moore’s great achievement can shine a little light there too."
High praise indeed – and fully deserved too.
