The reigning English and National Champions, Grimethorpe Colliery made an appearance on BBC Radio 5live's flagship evening sports programme, Sport on 5, on Thursday to perform one of the most identifiable pieces of music that is heard on the radio every Saturday at 5pm.

60 years of Sports Report

BBC Radio 5live were celebrating one of the bedrocks of British broadcasting on Thursday evening, the 60th anniversary of Sports Report broadcast every Saturday at 5pm for which the march, Out of the Blue, is used as the introductory music to the afternoon's sporting headlines.

Live from the bandroom

The BBC contacted us whilst the holidays were taking place and asked could we perform Out of the Blue live on the programme on ThursdayTerry Webster

In the presence of Radio 5live's Mark Clemett and a married couple who used the march at their wedding, members of the band were interviewed beforehand and then at the conclusion of the programme, performed Out of the Blue in its entirity.

O'Grady calls

Their radio performance on Thursday evening, isn't the only media appearance that the band has made during the holidays. Just before the holidays, members of the band featured on the Paul O'Grady Show on Channel 4 to help with their festive celebrations.

National Champion

Speaking with 4BR about both appearances, Band Manager Terry Webster commented 'We were asked to appear on television and radio as we are the National Champions and it was a great honour. The band is still on its Christmas break and doesn't return till next week but the BBC contacted us whilst the holidays were taking place and asked could we perform Out of the Blue live on the programme on Thursday. It did mean spending time down at the bandroom this week and asking players to come back earlier than anticipated, but it was worth it and it continues to keep brass bands in the spotlight'.
