Gareth Ritter, a former teacher and award-winning brass band conductor has been given a 33-month sentence, suspended for 30 months for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in 2015.
He will be registered as a sex offender for life and will face a further hearing for the court to consider costs as well as the imposition of a restraining order and sexual harm prevention order. He was also ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service.
Arrogance and self importance
In sentencing Ritter at Cardiff Crown Court, it was reported by the BBC that Judge Dyfed Llion Thomas said he had "grave reservations" as to whether Ritter was truly remorseful and said he had shown "arrogance and self importance" when giving evidence in his trial.
He said the assault had been planned and called his actions, "an abuse of trust", describing the incident as, "a cruel assault on a young woman by an older man".
The judge stated that it was "with some reluctance" that he had imposed only a suspended sentence.
Victim courage
It was also reported in news outlets that the judge praised the victim for her courage and told Ritter that he absolutely believed her evidence.
In her victim statement she had said that Ritter "abused his position"and that she was made to feel that the assault was her fault. In praising the police for their support she said that she would not let Ritter's action define her.
Ritter was given a 33-month sentence, suspended for 30 months, and was told he would be on the sex offenders' register for life. Ritter's defending barrister told the court that Ritter — who had no previous convictions — was "sorry beyond words for the stress and pain he had caused".
They added he had lost both his "long-serving" career in teaching and in music, as a result of his offending, and was seeking therapy.
Teacher and conductor
Ritter had previously admitted two counts of making an indecent photograph of a child and another of distributing an indecent photograph of a child.
At the time of the incident in 2015, Ritter was an assistant headteacher at Willows High School in Cardiff and had appeared on the Channel 4 series 'Educating Cardiff'.
He was also the Musical Director of Ebbw Valley Band and was a freelance conductor of bands, including the Greater Gwent Youth Band amongst others in Wales and England.
It was later reported that he had resigned from his conducting roles with Ebbw Valley and Lydbrook Bands in February 2025.
