Written for Helen Williams and based on the famous theme from George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue', Philip Harper takes a familiar melody and gives it an altogether more laid-back personality.
The Gershwin theme sits within the warm, jazz-infused writing, unfolding at an unhurried pace and allowing the lyrical lines room for expression. There's a lovely sense of ease to the accompaniment too, creating an almost late-night jazz-club atmosphere while still retaining the richness of the full brass band sound.
Short and sweet
At just three minutes, it doesn't outstay its welcome — instead providing a moment of calm and contrast, sophisticated and full of warmth.
For bands looking for something a little more understated, this is a beautifully crafted treatment of one of Gershwin's most memorable melodies.
