The Hathern Band has proudly celebrated its 170-year anniversary in 2026.

Formed by a group of framework knitters in 1856, Hathern is thought to be the oldest brass band in the Midlands. To celebrate the event, they produced an anniversary booklet which was launched at a recent Patrons' Evening.

Significance

The significance of the cultural importance of the band in their community saw recognition of its achievements come from wide ranging sources, including local dignitaries and the local MP.

Having performed in an acclaimed stage version of 'Brassed Off!' the band was also delighted to receive a message of congratulations from Tara Fitzgerald who played the part of Gloria in the film.

Ethos

The organisation's ethos of investing in youth has long seen it offer free tuition and instrument loans to youngsters — the success of which is now seen with over 50% of the current First Section senior band having come through the initiative.

One notable supporter since 1985 when he opened their new bandhall has been legendary cornet player Phillip McCann who said that the event marked what he called "the start of a very special relationship"
