Lions Youth Brass recently paid tribute to Derek Gardener, a remarkable volunteer who has served the organisation since its formation in 1989.
He recently announced his retirement from 'active service' after decades of supporting many hundreds, probably thousands of children to learn to play and enjoy music.
Service
In a recent presentation to him, the band stated: "Derek has often been the person to teach a beginner to hold an instrument and make their first sound, then sitting in the bands and supporting their development from beginners to advanced musicians, many of whom have gone on to study music and/or to continue to play in adult bands and orchestras."
They added: "He has never sought recognition or limelight. At times over the last near 40 years he has conducted the beginner and junior bands, played the cornet alongside children in all three bands, mended and maintained equipment, hired vans and transported equipment all over the country and abroad, and always given advice and support to every generation of musician."
New award
In his honour the band has created 'The Derek Gardener Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service' — an accolade reserved only for presentation in future to those who, like Derek, have also demonstrated an outstanding level of dedication, commitment and service to the organisation.
Fittingly the very first recipient was the person who inspired its creation.
