John Ward returns to the conducting rostrum in Stevenage to lead former champion Friary Brass in their Area challenge.

Friary Brass Band will link up with the experienced John Ward to spearhead its challenge to reclaim the London & Southern Area Championship Section title in Stevenage next month.

The interim appointment has been made as the band seeks a permanent replacement for former MD Nigel Taken. The band last won the Area title in 2019, although they did qualify for Royal Albert Hall in 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Highly respected

Speaking about the new musical link, Friary Chairperson, David Wicks stated: "During this time of change, we are very pleased to have secured John's services for our bid to return to the National Finals.

John has not applied for the MD position, but he is a highly respected conductor and adjudicator."

Positive

In looking forward to making his first appearance back at the contest since taking Fulham Band in 2023, John added: "I'm really happy to be asked to take Friary to the Area.

They are focused and positive which makes a great atmosphere to rehearse in. We'll be working hard to shape a performance we can all be proud of."

Also boosting the ranks is Flt Sgt Neil Wharton to the solo trombone seat, following his return after his two-year posting as Drum Major at RAF Cranwell.
