The Freckleton Band is preparing for its return to Championship Section contesting at the North West Regional Championships in Blackpool in March.
It follows a run of success under former MD Adam Taylor that saw them gain promotion, with recently appointed MD John Atkinson now looking to cement their place at the top level on Martin Ellerby's 'Elgar Variations'.
Momentum
He told 4BR that the band has gained further musical momentum boosted by a series of excellent concert performances, including a sell-out annual Christmas event in Lytham to round off 2025.
John said: "We have a great foundation in place to build on at Championship level, especially as we have also welcomed a number of new signings."
New signings
Those include Alison Cattanach who returns on second euphonium to link up with solo euphonium Pat Howard, whilst Tom Gray joins on bass trombone from Darwen Brass.
The percussion section is bolstered by the experienced Simon Atkinson, with Jayne Toyne returning to the ranks on first horn. In addition, former Littleborough and Wardle player, Kathryn Egan joins having recently moved to the area, with the band also welcoming back Joanne Cookson on second baritone. The line-up is completed by returnee Peter Lockett, who now takes on a new role on tuba.
This is an exciting time for the band, with new signings and a fresh approach as we look forward to BlackpoolMD, John Atkinson
Exciting time
John added: "This is an exciting time for the band, with new signings and a fresh approach as we look forward to Blackpool.
2026 also promises to be a busy year on both the concert and contest stage, and I'm thrilled with the way the band have already made me feel welcome and is working towards our ambitions."
