Memories recalled as Hutchinson takes final Cory bow

16 years of excellence and artistry were recalled as Tom Hutchinson took his final bow as principal cornet of Cory Band.

Cory Band's recent twin performances at Birmingham Town Hall marked the final concert appearances of principal cornet Tom Hutchinson.

It also marked the final chord of his outstanding 16-year tenure in role following the news of his move back to Yorkshire to join Black Dyke Band.

During that time he not only gained acclaim as one of the finest cornet players of his generation, but also one of the most successful, helping the band to an unprecedented level of achievement on and off the contest stage.

Legacy

The band stated that his legacy was, "one defined by both his immense talent and his exceptional character." They added: "On every stage, he led the band with distinction, demonstrating the very best of musicianship. Off-stage, he was a wonderful team player—a quality demanded of every musician in the Cory ranks."

During his tenure Cory secured 13 major championship victories, including two 'Grand Slams', whilst he was featured as a leading soloist on four overseas tours and released a brace of critically acclaimed solo CDs. He was also voted Cory's 'Player of the Year' on five occasions.

Tenure

The band added: "Tom's tenure sits alongside that of the late, great Ian Williams.

Together, these two remarkable individuals led the band for the last 36 years with immense distinction. With Tom's departure we now move with excitement and gratitude into a new era. He returns to Yorkshire with our very best wishes and with a special place in Cory Band's history."

I can't thank Philip Harper enough for all his support and kindness during our time together, and a massive thanks to everyone that's been involved with Cory Band past and presentTom Hutchinson

Biggest honour

Reflecting on his time, Tom wrote on his Facebook page: "After 16 years, my time with Cory Band is over. It's been the most incredible journey and the biggest honour of my life to help lead this band throughout its most successful period."

He added: "The support I've received since making the decision to rejoin Black Dyke Band has been heart-warming, and the friendships I've made here will last a lifetime.

I can't thank Philip Harper enough for all his support and kindness during our time together, and a massive thanks to everyone that's been involved with Cory Band past and present. You've made it so incredibly special, and I'll cherish the memories we made forever."
