The newly formed FC United Brass Band is to make its debut at US Masters Competition this weekend in Kansas City.
It will mark an exciting new venture for the Fountain City Band organisation — with the ensemble taking to the stage under the baton of Helen Harrelson with a mission to create a flexible, project-based space for adult musicians returning to brass banding after college, career changes, or time away from their instruments.
Jump in and out
It is hoped that it will encourage members to 'jump in and out' depending on their schedules, making it ideal for musicians balancing work, family, and other commitments.
Helen told 4BR: "The debut is especially meaningful for former members of our Fountain City Youth Program, now adults, who are reconnecting with the musical community that shaped them. It's wonderful to see them back playing after all these years and to see them bringing along their friends and family to join in on the fun."
Inspiration
The ensemble's premiere programme draws inspiration from the hit television series 'Stranger Things' as well as music such as the famous 'Finale from Faust' and sections of Philip Wilby's 'Paganini Variations' — all designed to challenge as well engage the players and audience.
Helen added: "Beyond performance, the ensemble emphasises training, mentorship, and leadership, giving members opportunities to conduct, compose, arrange, and lead community initiatives.
We are collaborating with Community of Note, an organisation bringing music education and performance experiences to underserved populations, whilst our Director, Jena Vangjel is spearheading holiday projects that include performances with the IntersectKC Street Choir, which features participants experiencing homelessness, and hosting musical workshops at the Rose Brooks Domestic Violence Shelter."

Power of collaboration
Speaking about those aspects, Jena Vangjel added: "The holiday performances with our partner organisations will provide meaningful connection and moving musical experiences within our community for those who are often at the margins.
It shows the power of arts collaboration in action!"
