74 years of outstanding dedication and service to Dundee Instrumental Band has been marked by a special presentation to cornet player Angus Lowden MBE.
The deserved recognition was made by Jim Wishart, the President of the Northern Counties Brass Band Association at a black-tie ceremony in Dundee.
11 to 85
Angus has been playing with the band from the age of 11 and has included tenures on just about every cornet position, including a fine tenure as principal cornet. The former meat inspector received the MBE in 2003 for his role in protecting public health for over 30 years.
At the band's awards evening, a slideshow of photographs recounted Angus's remarkable musical career — from his earliest days competing at the Arbroath Music Festival, through to his many successes playing in a brass ensemble with his brothers Alastair and David.
He has also enjoyed playing in small ensembles, orchestras and theatre shows, but still, at the age of 85 remains totally committed to the band.
Family tie
Angus was joined at the awards ceremony by his wife Kate. Also present was grandson Rory, a pupil at Monifieth High School who, from the age of nine, has kept up the family tradition by playing cornet.
"Angus has played such a key role in the story of music in the city,"said Dundee Instrumental Band president Alwyn Bolton at the awards ceremony. "The band is blessed to have this wonderfully talented and dedicated musician at the heart of everything we do."
Quintet of accolades
Also during the evening, five members of the band were presented with life memberships of the Scottish Brass Band Association for a combined total of over 260 years of service.
The accolades were awarded to Aileen Don, Joanna Campbell, Martin Jones, Peter Philbin and Kevin McGhee.
