50 years of outstanding commitment and service to the brass band community was recognised by the South West Brass Band Association with a presentation of a special 'Spotlight on Service' Award to player Dave Farmer.

Commitment

It took place during a concert given by Weston Brass of 'The Greatest Storytellers' at the Blakehay Theatre. It was made to Dave on behalf of SWBBA by John Woods, who spoke of Dave's unrivalled and respected commitment and dedication to the band and the banding movement.

Dave has been a stalwart of Weston Brass for half a century (and a life member for 12 years) and more now, embracing a variety of playing and administrative roles.

He is the band's lead percussionist and drummer — having learnt his trade with various local rock bands, whilst he was also a dedicated Band Chairperson for 15 years in two stints.

True and passionate

As John Woods remarked: "Dave is a true and passionate bandsman, being one of the best attendees at concerts, rehearsals, and social functions.

He is also always ready with a witty retort or funny story if persuaded, finds instruments no other player can find hidden away and is simply one of the very best people that can be found at the heart of the wider brass band movement."
