In perhaps a sign of the current musical times, the first AI Music Contest has been announced.
Although not for brass bands, the event organised in collaboration with Kappa FuturFestival, one of Europe's leading electronic music festivals, is a competition open to creatives and innovators who use AI technologies to explore new forms of integration between sound and visuals.
It aims to enhance the expressive potential of artificial intelligence in live performances.
Although AI has yet to make a huge impression, some composers are using it. Daniel Hall's Siddis contest work 'HumAnIty' included one piece that was created by AI — fooling 75% of the people who were asked to identify which work of the complete set had not been written by the composer.
Perform live
The finalists will perform live on stage at Kappa FuturFestival in Turin with a jury of fellow DJs and artists deciding the winner.
The theme of 'Experience of a Beat' will see artists use artificial intelligence to create immersive experiences combining music, visual arts and audience interaction.

New pathways
Speaking about the event, the DJ and visual artist Ali Demirel commented: "As an artist who is always looking for new sonic frontiers, I'm particularly interested in how AI will be integrated into live performances.
This contest could open new pathways for artistic expression in electronic music and visual arts Albertino, DJ and Artistic Director of m2o, added: "Artificial intelligence is having a strong impact on the world of electronic music, and I'm looking forward to discovering how participants will use it to create innovative and engaging live performances."
