Kirkby Stephen Silver Band will undertake an ambitious challenge in the form of a 24-hour playathon this June to raise funds to make their rehearsal space wheelchair accessible.
Longest day
It will start on Saturday 21st June at noon at their bandroom and will end 24 hours later at noon on Sunday 22nd June — embracing what is officially also the longest day of sunlight in the calendar.
Speaking about the initiative, spokesperson Raven Taylor told 4BR: "A few of our current members have mobility issues and find the steep steps a little tricky, and we would love to be able to make the facility fully wheelchair friendly so we can welcome as many visitors as possible."
Three year plan
Raven revealed that the fundraising is part of an even more ambitious three-year plan to turn their old scout hall into a community music hub.
She added: "Currently the space sits empty other than when the band uses it, so it has the potential to be of even greater benefit to our local community and used for other music activities and possibly hired out by other music groups.
The work that needs doing is quite extensive, but we are determined to succeed and have come up creative ways to fill the 24 hours,."

Birdsong
Raven revealed that this will include their resident wildlife expert and baritone player, Andrew, playing a dawn chorus as the sun comes up with instruments mimicking birdsong and someone creating a 'brass sound bass' fusion of brass and singing bowls.
She added: "We want everyone to be involved so if you want to be part just come along. There will also be a 24 hour quiz via the live stream too!"
