The Yorkshire Imperial Band has announced the appointment of Ian McElligott as their new Musical Director.

Bold and exciting

With a CV that includes tenures at the likes of Carlton Main Frickley Colliery and Brighouse & Rastrick where he remains part of their creative team as Arranger in Residence and Musical Consultant, the band told 4BR that his appointment marks a bold and exciting new period for the band.

Ian, who earlier this year led the band at the Yorkshire Regional Championships said: "I'm truly delighted and excited to accept the invitation to become Musical Director".

Eager to build

In response, the band told 4BR that they were eager to build upon that result as they aim to make further progress at Championship Section level in 2026.

They told 4BR: "Rehearsals under Ian's direction have been truly inspiring. His musicality, energy, and leadership have brought a renewed sense of focus and enthusiasm.

With exciting concerts on the horizon and fresh musical momentum, we are confident that this marks the beginning of a new era — one filled with challenges, growth, and top-quality performances."
