Helston Town Band has honoured cornet player Russell Harvey whose remarkable 80 years of service to the Cornish band saw him presented with a special silver salver at their recent Armistice Concert.
The presentation was made by MD Kevin Johns in recognition of his "loyal, unprecedented, continuous service."
76 Flora Days
A retired postal manager, Russell has played at 76 Flora Days, with only National Service and Covid stopping him.
He joined Helston in 1944 along with his brother, whilst his late wife Veronica supported him from the sidelines. His sons, Malcolm and Ian, both played in the band with him, with Ian still a playing member.
Russell's long- service was previously acknowledged in 2014, when he received special awards from Brass Bands England and the Cornwall Brass Band Association and in 2016, when he was recognised by Gorsedh Kernow for his contribution to local music.

Pub celebration
Speaking on their Facebook page, the band stated: "Russell will also celebrate his 90th birthday later this month in the pub alongside friends and colleagues.
They all continue to richly admire his fitness and positive attitude, as well as for being a fantastic role model and friend to everyone and the figurehead of Helston Town Band."
