The death has been reported of Peter Gane one of the brass world's leading brass performers and teachers. He was 76.
Aged 16 he won an open scholarship to the then Royal Manchester College of Music and at 19 became a member of the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed and recorded with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.
Founder and president
He was a founder and former president of the British Trombone Association and earned worldwide recognition for his work with young people. He enjoyed a long-standing association with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the European Union Youth Orchestra where he was professor of trombone.
In 2009 he was the acting director of the National Youth Orchestra for their acclaimed performances at the Aldeburgh Festival and Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
Teacher
A remarkable teacher, brass specialist and conductor he inspired countless players through his masterclasses and workshops. In 1996 he was presented with the Neill Humfeld Award for excellence in trombone teaching by the International Trombone Association.
Peter Gane became a professor and subsequently a Fellow at the Guildhall School and was Head of the Wind, Brass and Percussion department from 1988 to 2008. He was also Artistic Adviser to the Combret Music Festival, Aveyron in France.
A respected author of specialised trombone guides and manuals his name was also associated with a full range of mutes.

His passing was marked by the British Trombone Society, whose President, Simon Minshall stated: "Peter was a real source of knowledge and so supportive of young players.
