Works by Eric Ball and Liz Lane will face the semi-final conductors in Eccles

Works by Eric Ball and Liz Lane will pose the challenge for the 10 conductors who make it through to the semi-final of the Brass Band Conductors' Association (BBCA) conducting competition on 15th June.

Ball and Lane

The semi-finalists will have the opportunity to earn their place in the final by rehearsing Hammonds Band on a section of either Eric Ball's iconic 'Resurgam' or Liz Lane's four movement 'Rhythm of Light'.

Ball's work in inspired by his deep seated religious belief — the work subtitled 'I Shall Rise Again', whilst Lane's composition hails from 2020/21 with the four movements entitled, 'Landscape', 'Shadow cast by the sun', 'Pavan and Galliard' and 'Rhythm and dance and everything' in celebrating the life of sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

Semi-final and final

Adjudicators Sarah Groarke-Booth and Morgan Griffiths will select five finalists to rehearse and conduct the Eccles Borough Band in a concert item to be performed in the evening's Gala Concert.

BBCA's Mareika Gray will conduct Eccles in the rest of the concert (starting at 7.30pm) prior to the announcement of the winners.
