The Italian Brass Band, the ensemble from Rome which has won the European Challenge Section on three occasions since its formation in 2014, has been working hard to inspire future generations of brass band players in Italy.
The band proudly represented the nation in the Championship Section at the 2023 European Championships in Malmo and has sought to ensure that the nation continues to develop its fledgling brass band movement form the grass roots up.
School of Brass
Their weekend 'School of Brass' was recently held under the baton Musical Director Giuseppe Saggio, following a warm welcome given by the Italian Brass Band President, Claudio Valente.
With the majority of the players having little idea of the British brass band playing tradition, a short talk was given by bass trombone player Giovanni Celestino that covered both its proud history and exciting future.
The students in each section were then given section tuition by members of the Italian Brass Band, from cornet to tubas and percussion, on repertoire that covered different musical genres. The day ended with a full band rehearsal where what was learnt during the day was brought together.
The following day started with more section tuition before a full afternoon of full ensemble rehearsal which led to an evening concert.
Fantastic success
Speaking to 4BR, Giovanni Celestino said: "We have many challenges in Italy promoting brass bands, but this was a fantastic success.
To be able to give free masterclasses and tuition was unheard of and then to get together to rehearse and then play a concert was more than we could have dreamed of.
Each student left with more than just a certificate to say they took part — they also left with a love of brass banding in their hearts."

Support
He added: "I must thank the support of the Ennio Morricone School staff who hosted us and allowed us to use their facilities and their wonderful Federico Fellini Theatre for the concert.
Also to Buffet Crampon representative for Italy, Greece and Cyprus Giuseppe Scattareggia who prepared a special Besson Instruments Showroom so that students could play on their instruments.
Most of all though I must thank the brilliant students who left inspired and with a new love for what playing brass band music and in a brass band is all about. Now we aim to build on this to help grow brass banding in Italy."
