James Screaton takes on the principal cornet role

The GUS Band has appointed James Screaton as its new principal cornet.

The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire graduate moves up from the assistant role he has occupied since joining the band in 2015, although he has also played soprano cornet.

Right person

Band Chairperson, Dave Elliot-Smith told 4BR: "James is such a talented musician, and all-round great bandsperson. He has been playing as principal cornet for most of 2022, including the Grand Shield and numerous concerts, so it became obvious that he was the right person to lead the section and the band."

In response to the news, James said: "I'm excited to take on such a prestigious role and really looking forward to being part of the band's future success."

He will make his debut in his new role at a Festival of Remembrance Concert at De Montfort Hall, Leicester this weekend.

Long line

James becomes the latest in a long line of renowned players to take the role, with David Elliott-Smith adding that both previous incumbents James and Thomas Fountain, now playing with the London Symphony Orchestra and Ulster Orchestras, will always be welcome visitors at any time.

"Both epitomise everything that's so great about GUS. We watch on with immense pride at their careers and know that they've worked so hard for such success. James and Thomas know that they'll always be welcome at GUS. There's no doubt that the Fountain name will be synonymous with GUS for a long time come."
