The death has been announced of Jacqueline Beere, one of the administrative driving forces behind the Brass in Concert Championships since its inception in 1977.

Her passing follows a long and bravely fought illness. She was 63.

Key member

Along with her husband Paul, Jackie was a key member of the organising team that saw the event promoted in Darlington and Spennymoor, before developing into the main brass band entertainment festival of its kind in the world.

The news comes just a few weeks before the 45th Championship is due to be held at Sage Gateshead — the iconic venue which she was so proud to have helped secure for the future of the competition in 2005.

Jackie Beere's initial connection to Brass in Concert was through Paul's father, Cyril Beere, who began the event along with Peter Hartley, then conductor of nearby Barnard Castle Band, and Roy Newsome, who was brought on board as Musical Advisor.

Over the years her drive and welcoming personality were a feature of the contest weekend — always on hand to assist individual players and bands with their contesting needs.

Popular

Speaking following the news, Honorary President, David Bennett said: "This is an extremely sad time for us all, but our thoughts are especially with Paul and the Beere family, who have all been a tower of strength as Jackie has fought bravely against cancer.

Jackie was a very popular presence at Brass in Concert and she will be missed greatly by the many friends she always looked forward to meeting every November."

Thanks

David added: "We join the Beere family, including Cyril's wife, Enid, in thanking the wonderful staff of Freeman Hospital and St. Teresa's Hospice, who have done everything in their power to make Jackie's final months as comfortable as possible."

Jackie was the mother to Claire, Suzanne and Victoria and a proud grandmother to six children.

Funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are available.
