Music making to save the planet

A new on-line guide is being aimed at helping brass bands become climate change leaders in their local communities.

Change
Music making organisations can become leading activists in their local communities

A new on-line guide has been published to help brass bands adapt to a sustainable, resilient, and climate-changed future.

It has been produced by the Sheffield Region Brass Network in association with the Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy Programme and addresses the impact of climate change on the creative sector and community organisations.

Leading role

It sees brass bands being uniquely placed to play a leading role in driving change, and in transforming environmental understanding at a community level.

The suggestions on its website tailor specific guidance and an easy-to-follow processes which use the skills, experiences, and reflections of cultural institutions, as well as external climate change expertise.

It is hoped that addressing important environmental activities will help to normalise sustainability, raise awareness, build reputational goodwill and make long term sustainability a realistic goal. It may also increase opportunities for organisations to be successful in seeking funding streams.

Brass bands can play an important part in their community and positively influence local environmental impactSheffield Region Brass Network

Important part

Speaking about the guide, Stuart Young, Secretary of the Sheffield Region Brass Network, and member of the SME Climate Hub said: "Brass bands can play an important part in their community and positively influence local environmental impact.

Sustainability and the climate crisis are often talked about in terms of problems that can seem too big to the individual. But by being positive and showing your colleagues that they are one of many people taking a small action, it can make a big difference."
