The awards celebrate their 20th anniversary this year

The Ivors Academy has opened entries for its 2022 Composer Awards which recognise creative excellence in composition for contemporary classical, jazz, and sound arts.

First presented in 1956 an award is widely recognised as a pinnacle of achievement within the industry.

Over the past twenty years the awards have recognised composers including Harrison Birtwistle, Tansy Davies, George Benjamin, John Tavener and Errollyn Wallen.

Past winners

Past winners with a connection to the brass band world include Edward Gregson, Gavin Higgins, Nigel Clarke, Tom Davoren, Lucy Pankhurst, Rory Boyle and Simon Dobson.

Although there has been no specific 'Wind and Brass Band' category since 2021, brass band composers can be nominated in the categories of Small Scale Composition (up to 8 performers), Large Scale Composition (9 performers or more) and Sound Art, if appropriate, as the term 'classical works' has been given its widest possible definition.

The Ivors Composer Awards will take place on Tuesday 15th November at the British Museum, London.

Artistic excellence

Speaking about the awards CEO, Graham Davies, CEO, said: "For twenty years the Ivors Composer Awards has celebrated the UK leading the world in classical, jazz and sound art composition.

As entries open, we are excited to see the innovation and artistic excellent in composition over the past year."
