The death has been announced of the former Newmilns & Galston Band player and Chairman, Tom Paton. He was 86.
Known to everyone in Scottish banding as Tam, he started his banding career with Newmilns in 1946, before later joining the RAF to undertake his National Service.
On returning to civilian life he joined Galston Band and thereafter CWS Glasgow Band where he enjoyed his playing. In 1981 he returned to the recently revived Newmilns Band and alongside his brother Matt helped guide them through successful years of competition.
Life membership
His contribution to the banding movement was recognised with Life Membership of the Scottish Brass Band Association in 1996.
A spokesperson told 4BR: "Tam was hugely respected as a trusted and reliable supporter to all bands. He enjoyed his playing on euphonium and baritone alongside players who all became great friends, and on retiring he still enthusiastically followed Newmilns & Galston.
His famous 'fag paper crits' on performances were always sought after by players and supporters alike.
Tam will be sorely missed by the whole brass banding world and all at Newmilns & Galston Band send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
Funeral details
The funeral is to be held on Tuesday 3rd of May at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium, Dreghorn, Irvine (KA11 4EF) 12.30pm.
