A new work for a virtual brass band has just been premiered by an ensemble made up entirely of… dads.
'A Father's Love' has been written by conductor Neil Samuel, the former solo trombone with Leyland Band.
Recorded
Neil wrote the work, his sixth lockdown composition, for his two children, Ava and Finn and has been recorded in collaboration with Nicola Redhead, who edited and mixed them.
The performance features players from Black Dyke, Foden's, Guildford Brass, Leyland, the Household Troops, and International Staff Band, with leading instrumentalists including Mark Wilkinson (Foden's), John Doyle (Milnrow), Gavin Saynor (Black Dyke), Andrew Cattanach (Foden's) and Martin Britt (Friary).
Once I had finished I decided how nice it would be to have a band full of Dads record the music, whilst proudly showing off their own favourite photos of their own childrenNeil Samuel
Missing them
Neil, whose works are now published by Kirklees Music said: "When lockdown began I began to play around with bits of writing and arranging, so I decided to write a piece of music for Ava and Finn. I did this because at the time, they had just relocated to Oxford and every minute of every day was spent missing them like mad.
Once I had finished I decided how nice it would be to have a band full of Dads record the music, whilst proudly showing off their own favourite photos of their own children."
