World premiere work adds to BBSS attractions

Delegates to the virtual Brass Band Summer School course in August will be able to take part in a world premiere performance of a new work by Jonathan Bates as part of the extensive attractions.

BBSS
The Virtual Course is offering an unique learning and enjoyment experience for delegates

The Brass Band Summer School (BBSS) recently launched its new online platform for delegates taking part in next month's 'Virtual Course'.

Easy access

The intelligent interface which will be used by delegates has been developed especially for the BBSS by Mango Design to allow easy access to live sectionals, lessons, lectures, webinars, masterclasses and various resources.

The platform also provides a tuition studio for each tutor, as well as a Virtual Recital Hall, Lecture Theatre, Concert Hall, and a pub!

Although the BBSS doesn't officially begin until August 10th, once signed up, delegates are being given instant access to the platform, where they'll find sheet music and guide tracks to facilitate participation in a number of 'lockdown' videos, including the world premiere of a new work commissioned in memory of former administrator, Philip Biggs.

World premiere

'By Water and the Word' has been written by Jonathan Bates, combining 'The Day Thou Gavest' (St. Clements) and 'The Church's One Foundation' (Aurelia).

Speaking about it he told 4BR: "It was a huge honour to be asked to write the work. Philip was administrator of the BBSS for many years, but it was through his work with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) that he and the organisation had a tremendous impact on my musical development."

Wonderful melodies

He added: "Each course would conclude with an encore of 'St. Clements' and one of the most used hymn tunes throughout the week was 'Aurelia', so I felt it fitting to combine these two wonderful melodies paying homage to those memories and a great man."

The new work, together with 'Men of Harlech', 'Pastime with Good Company' and excerpts from Tchaikovsky's epic '1812 Overture', will form part of the BBSS's Grand Finale Gala Concert being broadcast on August 14th.

Delegates are being asked to upload their musical contributions, via the BBSS platform, by August 2nd, so don't delay!
