Ensemble de Cuivres Melodia is organising a virtual solo competition for young players to help keep them in trim during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ensemble de Cuivres Melodia, one of Switzerland's elite level Excellence Section competitors is the latest organisation to take a proactive approach to encouraging performers to keep in competitive trim during the current Covid-19 crisis.

They have launched their own virtual solo contest, open to young brass and percussion players in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

60th anniversary

The idea came from a members who wanted to create something original that could make up for the cancellation of the band's activities, and which would also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the band.

With a highly respected reputation for developing young players of their own (they have a strong 'B' Band that plays in the Second Division of the Swiss National Championships) they will be looking for entrants under the age of 21 who live in live in the French speaking area of the country.

The brass players can perform a slow melody of their own-choice, whilst and percussionists can also play any work they wish.

The video submissions will be judged by a panel composed of musicians of the A-Band, who will not know the identity of the players.

this contest is a good opportunity for young players to challenge themselves and will also help to mark the band's special anniversaryEnsemble de Cuivres Melodia

Three categories

Band spokesperson Timothee Sporli told 4BR: "The soloists will be split into three age categories and the judging panel will have to decide on the three best performances.

The winners of the respective sections will be given the opportunity to play a solo alongside Melodia at one of its upcoming concerts.

He added: "The current situation makes it difficult to organize a series of concerts for now but ideas are on the way, and this contest is a good opportunity for young players to challenge themselves and will also help to mark the band's special anniversary.

The members of the band wish every success to the participants and also send their best wishes to all the bands that are still waiting to go back to the practice room! "
