Wantage zooms in on new practice initiative

The innovative use of social media tools has enables Wantage Training Band to keep up their rehearsal schedule.

A number of bands are already thinking up different ways to ensure that players keep in practice during the current Coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The Wantage Silver Band organisation is one, with their Trainer Band, made up of a mixture of adults and children making sure they have not missed out on keeping everyone in peak practice fitness.

Zoom

Sam Wyne and Sara-Jane Wallbridge took it upon themselves to assume 'business as usual' for the willing players and hosted a special 'Zoom' rehearsal using the latest social media technology.

The session saw 16 players put through their paces with breathing exercises, mouthpiece buzzing, long note tones, scales, tonguing, lip slurs and even a piece to play together to round off the session.

With Sam and Sara demonstrating exercises and players performing to the rest of the group, it was a fantastic hour of music-making.

This technology is a great way to try and create a sense of normality for the players still wanting to enjoy making music together. We would urge people to give it a goSam Wyne

Technology

Sam told 4BR: "It might not be the same as going to band in person, but it's the perfect substitute! This technology is a great way to try and create a sense of normality for the players still wanting to enjoy making music together. We would urge people to give it a go."

Sam revealed that the suggestion came to them from Rosie Pickerill, and plans are already underway for the next rehearsal on Saturday."
