The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) Pathfinder education initiative has been shortlisted for a Times newspaper Higher Education Award.

Nominated in the 'Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year' category, the innovative scheme started as a six month pilot in 2017, developing into a three-year programme in partnership with two Manchester Music Education Hubs and the BBC Philharmonic.

Aim

It aims to enable young people aged 10 — 16 to overcome financial, social and cultural barriers to progressing their musical talent, becoming confident, independent learners supported and motivated in their music-making.

Content includes a personalised programme of workshops, mentorship, tuition and ensemble training from RNCM students, staff and BBC Philharmonic musicians.

Each participant receives a tailored package of activity shaped to their music education needs and personal circumstances.

Honour

John Gill, THE editor, told 4BR: "With 23 categories this year, we're also showcasing more exceptional stories than ever before. It's a real honour for us to shine a spotlight on all those who have made it as far as these shortlists — their stories deserve much wider circulation."
