Michael Robertson, the conductor of the Carnoustie & District Youth Band has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for Services to Music in Angus in Scotland, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Inspirational
He has been the inspirational conductor of the band since its formation in 2008, leading them to incredible success, including multiple Scottish Youth Championship and National Youth Championship titles as well as taking them on a once in a lifetime tour to China in 2018.
He has also conducted the Arbroath Instrumental Band since 1999, winning the Scottish Fourth Section title in 2001 and the Second Section titles in 2009 and 2017.
Worshipful Company
Born in Alloa, he attended the Royal College of Music and worked for many years as a brass instructor with Tayside and more latterly with Angus Council. He was awarded the Mortimer Medal in 2011 from the Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of his services for teaching of young people in the brass band movement.
