The name of The GUS Band will again adorn contest, concert programmes, as well as hopefully the list of Championship Section winners, following the decision to rebrand the current band with its proud past.
Famous name
Chairman, Dave Elliot-Smith told 4BR that the decision recognises the most famous name in its history and covers variations on a theme, such as The G.U.S. (Footwear) Band and G.U.S. (Kettering).
"Throughout its history the band's name has reflected the contributions of a host of generous sponsors. However, during the last few years the band has not been in receipt of any sponsorship and so retaining 'Virtuosi' has become misleading.
Essentially, we are usually identified as 'The GUS Band', so formalising that seems consistent with our brand.
We are also hugely appreciative of Geneva Instruments for the very generous assistance they have provided these last four years in providing a set of cornets."
New lease of colour
Meanwhile, cornet player and archivist, James Screaton has also been bringing a new lease to a number of iconic photographs in the band's collection, by using a graphic design colouring technique to shine a new light on pictures that go back to the Munn & Felton era.
James commented; "It's always fascinating studying our memorabilia and reminding ourselves that we are the custodians of the band's heritage."
Thanks to help from the well known brass band historian Tim Mutum and R. Smith & Co publishing, pictures include those of Stanley Boddington and Harry Mortimer discussing the score of the test piece 'Blackfriars' just days before Mortimer led the band to victory at the 1955 National Championships.
There is even an image from around 1936 of the band on their way to the famous Crystal Palace National Championships.

Donations
A part of the new link to the past James will now be on hand at a special heritage stand at The GUS Band concerts, and would love to hear from people who may be able to donate items of interest to the band.
