Rebrand for 5 time champion

The new name on the London & Southern Counties Regional Championship trophy is Friary Brass Band...

Frairy
Friary claimed their fifth consecutive title at Stevenage on the weekend.

A new name will be engraved on the base of the London & Southern Counties Championship Section trophy this year after Friary Brass Band claimed their first of what is now five consecutive wins at the event on the weekend.

The former Friary Guildford Band has changed its name following an enforced move of rehearsal venue due to the redevelopment of their previous home at Chobham Club, near Woking. Friary is now based a few miles away at All Saints Church, Woodham.

Ten year prompt

Band Chairman Nigel Stevens explained that as their geographical identity has changed so has the need for their name to do likewise: "It's now over ten years since we were actually based in Guildford, and this latest change prompted us to review our name and brand.

We retain our heritage via the Friary name, derived from the former Friary Meux brewery in Guildford which sponsored us for the first ten years, but decided that the continued inclusion of 'Guildford' gave a misleading impression. We nevertheless hope to retain our longstanding links with the Borough.'

Welcome

He added: "After a lengthy search for a new home, we have been made extremely welcome at All Saints, Woodham and look forward to a long and happy relationship with the Parish."
