The Sheffield based Unite the Union Band has welcomed a quartet of new players as they look ahead to the Yorkshire Regional Championships in a few weeks time.

The experienced Jason Smith comes in on the front row from Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band, where he was principal cornet. He previously played for Thoresby Colliery and Carlton Main Frickley.

Joining him is Becky Marsh from Rainford Band. Becky has moved to Sheffield to start her studies at the University of Sheffield, whilst the back row cornet welcomes Philippa Smith. Philippa comes to the band playing for Yorkshire Imperial Urquart Travel.

Completing the quartet is Sophie Barwick who joins on tenor horn. Sophie was previously a member of Roberts Bakery Band and is also studying at the University of Sheffield.

The quartet follows in the musical footsteps of Rachel Onions on tuned percussion and Max Owen on Eb Bass who joined in September.

Talented

Band Chairperson, Melissa Maddison told 4BR: "We are delighted to welcome these talented musicians. There is a real sense of positivity as we continue to move forwards and grow from strength to strength.

We have a fantastic social scene and are really looking forward to 2019 being a very successful year."

Looking forward

In response to the news Musical Director John Roberts added: "I'm enjoying working with the band as we prepare 'Seascapes', even more so as I remember it the first time round, and I'm also looking forward to the Spring Festival where we'll be playing another great piece in 'Triumphant Rhapsody."
