4BR recently headed to Media City in Manchester to hear euphonium virtuoso David Childs at work with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Principal Guest Conductor, Ben Gernon.
CD release
2019 will see the release of David's second 'Symphonic Euphonium' CD featuring concertos by Edward Gregson, Michael Ball and Paul Mealor, as well as the first euphonium recording of the Ralph Vaughan Williams F Minor Tuba Concerto.
Originally written in 1954 for Philip Catelinet, the celebrated principal tuba of the London Symphony Orchestra, he performed the three movement work on the F tuba.
Research
Research has confirmed that the composer also felt that it would be appropriate for the euphonium, so a special orchestral version by Rodney Newton has been realised for the recording.
David talks to 4BR about the work and the other major concertos on the release, whilst 4BR Editor Iwan Fox also talks with Ben Gernon, Edward Gregson and producer Brian Pidgeon.
