Audiences at this weekend's Cheltenham National Finals will be able to enjoy free recitals by one of the most exciting young brass talents in the UK.

BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award winner Thomas Nielsen will perform before the Second Section results ceremony on Saturday afternoon, as well as the Third Section results the following day.

Award winner

In 2017, Thomas became principal cornet and leader of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain — a position he still holds and has won the Katie Ogden Memorial Solo Award twice, the Harold and Bernard Tovey Memorial Award for Excellence and become the first person ever to win the Phillip McCann Cornet Award three times.

Earlier this year he became the first cornet player to win the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award and last weekend was the featured soloist with Black Dyke at the Sunday Gala Concert at Symphony Hall on the British Open Championship weekend.

Excited

He told 4BR: "I'm very excited to be performing two short recitals at Cheltenham with my accompanist Elliot Launn. As it's my first time visiting the event I'm looking forward to both seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

I'm very grateful to Kapitol Promotions for giving me this opportunity."
