One MD aims to be fit and ready for Cheltenham

Josh Hughes of Lostock Hall Memorial Band is ensuring he will be fit as a fiddle to take his band on stage at the National Finals in September.

Josh Hughes, Musical Director of Lostock Hall Memorial Band, is going to be working not just on his band's contest day fitness for the National Finals in September — but also his own.

As he told 4BR, over the last few years, Lostock's successful progress on the contest stage has not been mirrored by his own fitness regime — so the appearance at Cheltenham was the ideal way to get him up to speed so to speak…

"Over the years I've progressed from playing to conducting. I've really enjoyed it and have been fortunate to enjoy some success. However, my level of fitness has gone in the opposite direction thanks to a few too many post-rehearsal take-away meals."

Ideal time

He added: "I thought now was the ideal time to sort myself out, so I'm going to help raise funds for the band to get the Cheltenham by cycling the 171 miles from Lostock to the famous racecourse."

Josh first came up with the idea before the Regional Championships in Blackpool earlier this year, with the players reminding after their victory that he couldn't now go back on his word after they had secured their first qualification success in 10 years and one that coincided with the band's 70th anniversary.

I've already told the band though that if we do win, I won't be promising to ride the opposite way home!Josh Hughes

Three day trip

"I'll be making the trip with a friend over three days in July, taking in some great landmarks along the way such as the Dream Sculpture, Mersey Gateway, Beeston Castle, Ironbridge and Worcester Cathedral before reaching my destination.

I've already told the band though that if we do win, I won't be promising to ride the opposite way home!"
