In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the creation of the National Health Service, the soprano cornet solo 'Legacy' written by Tom Davoren can now be downloaded free of charge to be performed in either a full band or solo version by any brass band, anywhere in the world.

The work was given its world premiere by Tredegar Band in its home town and birthplace of the NHS on July 1st, followed by a special performance featuring soloist Ian Roberts and the band in The Speaker's House in heart of the Palace of Westminster on July 5th — 70 years to the day the NHS came into being.

Founding ethos

'Legacy' was commissioned with funding through the Welsh music organisation Ty Cerdd with the decision to make it free to all following its premiere mirroring the founding ethos of its architect and inspiration, Labour politician Aneurin Bevan.

Bevan was born in Tredegar in 1897, and after working in the local pit and becoming a local councillor, went on to become one of the leading figures of the post war Labour Government under Clement Attlee — battling against the odds to give the nation the National Health Service in July 1948.

The Parliamentary occasion was hosted by The Speaker, John Bercow MP and featured speeches from him, Lord Kinnock and Bevan biographer Nick Thomas-Symonds MP.

Heart of our mission

In welcoming the decision to make the music available to the world free of charge, Deborah Keyser, Ty Cerdd's Director, earlier stated: "Supporting new work to be composed and enjoyed by audiences is at the heart of our mission, and we hope 'Legacy' will become a part of brass band repertoire for many years to come."
